Goodreads Book Review: Blog, Inc by Joy Cho

Blog, Inc.: Blogging for Passion, Profit, and to Create CommunityBlog, Inc.: Blogging for Passion, Profit, and to Create Community by Joy Deangdeelert Cho
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Reading the description of the book and the reviews I knew what to expect generally from Blog, Inc. It is a spot on title because it really is about blogging for passion turning that into profit and utilizing/creating community connections to amplify the effects of both.

It helped that I wasn’t reading this in order to begin blogging or to try to profit from it because as has been mentioned in other reviews this isn’t a how to book for getting started blogging. But I was curious about what Joy Cho would have to say about transforming a blog into a business.

My rating reflects the niche value of the book’s contents. I think that if you’re in that niche that the book is intended for (someone already following a passion via the blogging format), it deserves a higher rating. Cho touches on things to consider about running what is essentially a small business and gives a general roadmap for the journey. But, it is a relatively short book. The onus is on the reader to do the research and tailor that roadmap to their own business.

The sections I enjoyed the most as someone who isn’t the target audience of this book at this specific time in my life were the interviews with bloggers who have grown their blogs into businesses. I almost felt that I would have preferred if Cho had partitioned the book into sections such that all of the business information would have been separate from the interviews. In a sense it felt like two different books. I understood that she was using different people’s success stories to introduce aspects of blogging as a business but (for me) it was distracting.
